I am excited to share some of my favourite author portraits from a recent photoshoot with a lovely friend and writer, Joanna Glen. When I first arrived in London, Joanna was one of the very first people I had the pleasure of meeting. Her kindness and warmth made a lasting impression on me, and her positive energy has stayed with me ever since.
Joanna Glen’s memorable début novel, The Other Half of Augusta Hope (2019), was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award and the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award. Her second book, All My Mothers (2021), is a big favourite of mine and is really close my heart (and not only because the main character is called Eva). Her third novel, Maybe, Perhaps, Possibly, comes out on 25 April 2024 – it’s a literary love story about two outsiders who have no idea how to fall in love with each other.
Joanna’s books explore timeless themes like connection, love and belonging. Her sensitivity and genuine curiosity about others give her a deep understanding of human emotions, which comes across beautifully in her emotive and evocative writing. Her love affair with Spain, Spanish culture and literature is a big and important part of her life, as is her passion for the natural world.
Joanna wrote her first book when she was seven (!), but didn’t become a novelist until many many years later. After reading Spanish at the University of London (with a stint at the Faculty of Arts at Cordoba University in the south of Spain) she went on to teach Spanish and English to all ages, and later became a School Principal in London. Since then, she has worked variously as a coach, a visiting lecturer, an adviser for schools and a creative writing tutor. (Well, an all-round super woman!)
I took Joanna’s first author photos five years ago in London – a year before her first novel was published. (It is really exciting to see my photographs printed in books too!) So we thought it was time for an update to her author portrait. Joanna has now moved to Brighton, and I visited her in her lovely new home and took some relaxed, informal images in her garden, next to the cabin, where she writes.
